FCC Calls For Mandatory Digital Broadcast Transition Spots

  • October 18, 2007
In testimony to a House Commerce subcommittee hearing on the digital TV transition, FCC Chairman Kevin Martin said U.S. broadcasters should be required to air daily public service announcements informing viewers about the transition to digital broadcasting on Feb. 17, 2009. The spots would alert consumers that effective with that date, analog TV sets would be unable to receive over-the-air TV signals without a special converter box. The testimony comes days after the National Association of Broadcasters announced plans for a $697 million campaign to educate consumer about the digital broadcast transition, including a heavy schedule of TV advertising. Publicis' Starcom MediaVest Group was tapped by the NAB to handle the campaign.
