End-of-Year Site Tune-Up Tips

Matt McGee says if you're a small business owner, tuning up your Web site should be a goal you set for yourself -- even before we usher in 2008. So he drafted a 10-point plan to do so.

Reviewing your company info (like an "About Us" page, a "Management Team" page, etc.) and contact info might seem like common sense, but personnel and telephone or fax info can change multiple times over the year -- and sometimes the task of updating it on the site gets forgotten. The same goes for updating your copyright or privacy policies.

McGee says to test your site's auto-reply function, the usability of all registration or other forms, and to make sure your email routing gets the right message to the right person on staff. Test all outgoing links to ensure that the sites they connect users to still exist and are relevant and updated.

Lastly, you should review your site's domain records (including the renewal date, if applicable), password-protected access, and give it an overall appraisal in terms of design, usability, and freshness of content.
