GartnerG2, a business research and advisory service from Gartner Inc., today released new research saying online sales in Europe will reach EUR 97.8 billion ($85 billion) in 2002, a 48% increase from EUR 66.2 billion ($57.6 billion) in 2001. It warned that despite the sharp increase, online sales will only account for 2.3% of total retail sales in Europe. By 2005, the European online retail market will grow to EUR 258.7 billion ($225 billion) accounting for 5.6% of total retail sales. GartnerG2 urged retailers to carefully review their online investment plans and warned that too many companies are wasting resources competing for direct sales from what remains a relatively small total market potential. It said retailers will need to ensure they deploy a laser focus to their chosen segments and choice of channel, in contrast to the broader strategies used today.
