New York City Forcing Calorie Counts On Menus

  • January 23, 2008
Beginning March 31, chain restaurants with more than 15 units nationally will have to list the calorie counts of menu items in New York City. The ruling affects about 10% of all restaurants there.

The New York Department of Health had argued last year that proving the information would give citizens "more informed, healthier choices."

The New York Restaurant Association sued the Board of Health to block the measure, claiming it would violate its members' First Amendment rights.

The group may still pursue legal action, it said on Tuesday.
