It's Local Search, Only On Your TV

AT&T's Yellowpages.com is available to subscribers of the telecom giant's U-verse IPTV service, and Peter Krasilovsky serves up a review of this nascent but promising local search offering.

Users can "rent" the service (a la on-demand) and after a one-time download of graphics and info, can start viewing their YP listings online. The Yellowpages.com logo appears at the top of the screen, and then users have their choice of nine core categories. Choosing one turns up about a dozen business listings, with "featured listings" (complete with info like hours of operation and address) displayed most prominently, and all of the listings have their location pinpointed on a map.

Krasilovsky says that the service is clearly in beta phase, as the logos and fonts of the featured listings were hard to read, the mapping option didn't always load correctly, and the load times were slow. The TV listings also didn't offer nearly as much info as IYP listings could. Still, as IPTV gains traction, it's likely that the quality of this particular kind of local search offering will improve.
