B-to-B Bucks Rise For March

Business-to-business print advertising spending was up for the fifth straight month, according to March figures released by American Business Media. Ad dollars were up 5.8% compared to March 2002, while pages were down 5.0%. For the quarter, spending was up 4.2% and pages were down 5.0%. Eight of the 12 categories showed improvement in ad spending in March compared to the same period the year before. The Automotive sector posted the biggest gain, climbing 27.3%. Home & Building rose 18.3%; Retail was up 16.3%; Services, Direct Response & Classified up 13.7%; Drugs & Toiletries up 8.9%; Finance, Business & Advertising up 7.4%; Software up 4.0%; and Manufacturing & Electrical Equipment, Materials & Components up 2.8%. The remaining categories were down: Horticulture & Farming by 46.8%; Telecommunications by 23.8%; Computers by 12.2%; and Travel by 2.6%.
