The TuduorsAs the second season of Showtime's "The Tudors" moves toward its finale, the pay-cable network said it has picked up a third for 2009.

Production will begin in June in Ireland. The show, starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers, debuted in the spring of 2006.

"The Tudors" is now a fixture for us at Showtime, and we're on our way to completing the entire saga of all six wives of Henry VIII," said network President of Entertainment Robert Greenblatt. "We are enormously proud of this show, the extraordinary cast, and the production team that recreates the grandeur of the Renaissance year in and year out."

Ben Silverman and Teri Weinberg, now executives at NBC, are among the executive producers.

Showtime has been on a successful run, with "The Tudors" playing a major part in launching original programming. Some observers have recently said the cable net has surpassed competitor HBO in that area.
