WPIX Takes First Place Awards for New York TV

  • June 25, 2003
The Associated Press has honored Tribune Television Station WPIX Channel 11 with first-place awards in four of its 13 TV journalism categories for news stories reported in 2002. The New York State Associated Press State Broadcasters Association presented the awards to New York's WB affiliate at its annual banquet in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. WPIX reporter/anchor Mary Murphy, who won several Emmy Awards earlier this year, repeated the feat in the AP competition. She was the only New York TV news reporter to win first place in two categories, Best Interview and Best Continuing News Coverage, which she shared with producer Patricia Ivers.

Reporters Cathy Hobbs, Peter Thorne, Glenn Thomson, Rosemary Gomez and Howard Thompson took first place in one of two categories established to judge coverage of the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack. WPIX weekend sportscaster Sean Kimmerline won first place in Best Sports Coverage and WPIX sports anchor Sal Marchiano earned a special mention (along with producers Bob Taute and Dave Scanlon) for a report on sports on the anniversary of the terrorist attack.
