Help! My Top Keyword Rankings Have Disappeared

Though the bulk of a Web site's traffic may come from long-tail keywords, it's still disheartening when a site suddenly drops in ranking (or stops ranking altogether) for broad terms. Aaron Shear offers up tips for helping to figure out why a site's rankings may tumble for specific keywords, starting with checking out your server and page load times.

"For example, my blog is on a hosted environment and can commonly take longer than two seconds to bring up a simple static article -- not the greatest user experience normally found," Shear says. "This is amplified when multiple queries at the same time are introduced to a server that may not be configured correctly, or is incapable of responding adequately."

Have you recently moved to a hosting service that serves IPs from a country outside of the core engines' range? "This resets many filters that are used by engines such as Google and can wipe out ranking in one quick swoop."

Meanwhile, make sure that any new affiliate deals you've inked aren't working against you in terms of duplicate content and site authority. Otherwise, your affiliates could be snagging your traffic and rankings--and making you pay more for it.
