Internet Radio Listening Index Rises 5%

MeasureCast, Inc. today announced that the top 10 Web radio networks for the week of March 11 streamed a combined total of 4,034,980 hours of programming - 66,827 more hours than the group streamed the week before. Five of the top 10 networks measured by MeasureCast attracted larger audiences than they did the week before, and six networks recorded an increase in the total number of hours streamed to listeners. In addition, the 1,248 Internet radio stations measured by MeasureCast during the week of March 11-17 streamed a combined total of 6,423,886 hours.

The Clear Channel Worldwide network of online radio stations finished the week as the number one online radio network. Its 197 streaming AM and FM stations delivered 1,088,273 hours of programming over the Internet, up from 1,031,402 hours the week before. The Warp Radio group of online AM and FM stations streamed a total of 616,479 hours, making it the second most-listened-to streaming radio network. London-based Virgin Radio won first place in the latest MeasureCast Top 25 ranking by streaming 310,870 hours of programming. JazzFM, which is owned by Clear Channel Worldwide, took the number two spot by streaming 223,639 hours.

The MeasureCast Internet Radio Listening Index for the week of March 11 rose 5%. The total time spent listening to streaming radio stations measured by MeasureCast has increased 452% since January 2001. Nineteen stations in the MeasureCast Top 25T ranking (six more than the week before) saw an increase in their total number of hours streamed, and 20 stations (five more stations than the week before) attracted larger audiences.

MeasureCast says that 76% of all listening occurred during traditional work hours - 5 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific. 12% of the week's Internet radio listening took place over the weekend. The peak listening day was Tuesday, March 12, with 19% of all listening occurring this day. Also, 30% of Internet radio listeners were between the ages of 25 and 34; 57% were younger than 35; 28% were younger than 25; and 6% were older than 55. Most Web radio listeners were men (69%). Countries with the largest number of Internet radio listeners listening to stations measured by MeasureCast included Canada, Japan, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
