Nielsen//NetRatings today released its Global Internet Index for February, finding that Classmates took the No. 1 spot with the biggest increase in unique audience among the top 25 global properties, while Gator debuted in the global top 25. Classmates expanded its personal networking directories by over 400% in February, which clearly presented the potential for a wider global audience. While the bulk of its February audience was from the United States, nearly a million visitors came from Canada and Europe each - particularly from the UK, Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden - and Australia, Brazil and Mexico weighed in with more than 100,000 visitors each.
Gator's entrance to the list, analysts said, represents an "interesting answer to the ongoing debate about the strength of the Internet's advertising-based business model."
