Total spending on TV ads in the 2008 presidential race is expected to top $800 million, said Evan Tracey, COO of the Campaign Media Analysis Group, per Reuters. In 2004, the total was $500 million. That's a lifeline to TV stations, which are seeing a precipitous drop in car and real estate advertisers. Cable TV advertising is expected to rise 6%, according to ZenithOptimedia.
