NAB: Majority Of Americans Ready For Digital TV Switch

basic digital cable boxTwo-thirds of TV homes that get their programming by over-the-air signals have taken action in light of a federally-mandated change to all-digital transmissions come next year.

A new survey by the National Association of Broadcasters, says 64% of U.S. households have moved to either become a cable or satellite distributor or have applied to get a DTV converter box. The survey polled 5,535 broadcast-only homes.

35% of broadcast-only homes said they would buy a DTV converter box using the government coupon. Those TV homes can use a discounted converter box, costing $40, with that coupon. 45% stated they would buy a TV set with a digital tuner.

A multimillion ad campaign by the NAB has been somewhat successful, according to analysts. The poll was taken between March 29 and May 13.

Still, other analysts and surveys believe not everyone is getting the message. Congress has been looking to add funding for additional outreach efforts. A $65 million bill in House Energy & Commerce Committee looks to help low-power and rural TV stations turn digital sooner. The bill has passed the Senate, which will also include DTV education.

Analog signals of over-the-air television end on Feb. 17, 2009, when a switch will be made to all-digital broadcast signals.
