Verizon Wireless has launched a new service dubbed Usage Controls to help subscribers better manage mobile activity. The Web-based tool expands on Verizon's existing set of parental controls by letting users set limits on voice minutes as well as on text, picture, video and instant messaging.

The service can also be used to restrict mobile data use and messaging during certain times of day and to create lists of blocked and "trusted" numbers. (Calls to 911 will always be allowed to connect.) Usage Controls costs $4.99 a month per line and requires Verizon subscribers have a nationwide calling plan.

Earlier this month, T-Mobile USA launched its Family Allowances program, which lets parents set an upfront monthly amount for teens to spend on minutes, messaging and multimedia downloads.--Mark Walsh
