The Original Long Tail (Growl!)

Turns out, it has nothing to do with Google, Amazon or eBay. Actually, it has more to do with National Geographic, Rob Covery, senior vice president of digital media for the exploratory media brand shared this morning during his luncheon keynote at OMMA Expo.

To prove it, Covey cued up his presentation with a short video expert of Nat Geo’s documentary capturing rare video footage of Himilaya’s snow leopard. The special points out that snow leopards have “the longest tail.” They need them to navigate their way at high speeds down steep mountain slopes while chasing their prey.

“Which leads me to a very bad pun,” Covey segued. “The long tail.”

Actually, Covey went on to demonstrate how a mass media brand like National Geographic is tapping into and leveraging the Internet’s long tail to strengthen its content and its reach.
