Home Depot Sales, Earnings Fall

The Home Depot says its earnings for the third quarter slipped to $756 million compared to $1.1 billion in the same period a year ago, while sales fell 6.2% to $17.8 billion. On a comparable-store basis, sales dropped 8.3%.

"The housing and home improvement markets remain challenging," its CEO says in a statement. And given the continued softness in the housing and home improvement markets, it says its fiscal 2008 sales may fall as much as 8%, with earnings tumbling approximately 24%.--Sarah Mahoney
