Google AdWords Spoof Goes Phishing

  • November 28, 2008
Barracuda Networks, a Campbell, Calif.-based email and Web security apps firm, has seen an increased number of phishing emails designed to look like Google AdWords through alert emails sent to subscribers.

The URL in the email that directs receivers to the Google AdWords account Web page appears to be legitimate, but the link redirects users to a Web site hosted in China.

Consumers are then required to provide their Google username and password and are prompted to update account credit card number information to avoid having their account suspended. Unsuspecting users who provide this information run the risk of fraudulent charges to their credit card.--Laurie Sullivan
