Spike's New Reality: NFL Tryout Show

Micahel Irvin ex-Dallas CowboyThe Spike network is taking a page out of its "Ultimate Fighter" playbook with a new series that could give the average guy a shot at making the 2009 Dallas Cowboys.

The untitled series -- hosted by ex-Cowboy Michael Irvin -- features 12 NFL hopefuls battling in skills challenges. The winner is guaranteed a spot in the Cowboys' summer training camp and the chance to gain a roster spot if he impress Coach Wade Phillips. It's set to premiere this spring, allowing the winner time to get in shape to impress the coaching staff.

Spike has had tremendous success with the "Ultimate Fighter," where the winner earns an opportunity to join the Ultimate Fighting Championship competition. The Irvin-fronted show will give it a third sports-oriented reality-competition series, along with "Pros vs. Joes."

The new show is expected to feature a range of former and perhaps current Cowboys and other luminaries in various roles, including judges.

Irvin's Playmaker Productions -- derived from his sobriquet during his playing career -- is behind the show, along with established production outfit 3 Ball Productions.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will make appearances, a sign that he's given the green-light for the winner to perhaps join the team.

Irvin said, "There is so much great undiscovered football talent out there. Guys that may have missed their shot for one reason or another. This is about hope and a shot at greatness."
