Coupons Inc. Buys iPhone Shopping Application

  • January 29, 2009
Expanding further into mobile, Coupons Inc. has snapped up Grocery IQ, an iPhone application that allows users to organize personal shopping lists by store, aisle, buying history and favorites. It comes pre-loaded with more than 130,000 items commonly found in supermarkets.

"GroceryIQ has quickly established itself as the category leader among grocery shopping applications for the iPhone and is a natural complement to our rapidly expanding digital coupon platform," said Steven Boal, CEO of Coupons, in a statement. Terms of the company's deal with GroceryIQ-maker Free State Labs were not disclosed.

A modified version of the application will match shoppers' grocery lists with Coupons.com coupons and provide multiple ways to redeem the coupons via mobile device. A free upgrade will also allow users to download layouts of nearby supermarkets and organize shopping lists accordingly to save time.

Demand for coupons has heated up as the economy has gone into a deep freeze. More than 36 million people used online coupons last year, and the number that used online coupons only grew 50%, according to Simmons Market Research Bureau.--Mark Walsh
