Just An Online Minute... Survey: Web Health Info Lacking

Seventy-one percent of Web users seek health information online, but the vast majority are disappointed with the quality of material available, according to a new report by JupiterResearch.

Consider, a paltry 16 percent said they actually find the health information they're looking for online, according to the report, which was based on a May survey of more than 2,000 Web users.

What type of material do they seek? Sixty-eight percent wanted to learn more about specific medical conditions, like diabetes or heart disease, while 43 percent said they wanted general health information, and 42 percent were interested in learning more about particular drugs.

To date, they use a mix of general search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN, and search engines focused specifically on health, like Yahoo Health, or the engine available at WebMD. Sixty percent of all respondents said they search for health information on general engines, 42 percent search specifically at health-focused engines, and 32 percent use both, according to the report.

When consumers were asked what would improve the state of health-related search, popular responses showed a high degree of Web savvy. Fifty-three percent of heavy search users (those who rely on search more now than one year ago) said they wanted clear indications of the author or source of the material. Forty-eight percent of the heavy searchers wanted a list of keywords related to their search, and 43 percent wanted to know which sites other users thought were helpful.

Why can't I find the report on the Forrester Research site (asked someone else to look for it and they came up empty too)? Are these data and their interpreattion anything like the podcasting/blogging fiasco?

Uh oh! If search quality becomes a subjective, internally-assigned attribute of a served page, the subjectification begins to smack of AOL-ish "filtering"; this hasn't proved successful in the long run.

In essence the evaluation of page traversal within a site, coupled with blogokudos, blogoflames, and blogomonials, becomes the quality index. No longer will the page hit be effective in percolalting up content in the search engines--it's the cumulative site traffic that will become the measurement of interest.

This research further supports the finding of the 2005 Health information National Trends survey that found more and more individuals are arming themselves with medically-related information from the web, particularly from "ask an expert" types sites such as www.HealthyOntario.com

And yet, so many people will accept almost any information they find on the web as accurate. People often ask www.CosmeticSurgeryTravel.com to supply before and after photos and other "real" information. We have a policy against doing so because this can be totally bogus.

yes, this is a problem. Well, there may be part of a solution at www.helpshare.com where you can post questions and get answers from other users. Yahoo and Google have built similar "answers" solutions as well. One cool thing about HelpShare is that their Q&A engine can be private labled (e.g. http://businessweek.helpshare.com) so maybe one of the big health portals can get Q&A going on thier site.

There is a good source of information that has many active conversations with a toll free number for people to call into specific shows and ask a health realted questions. It can be found on line at www.health.voiceamerica.com. Live Talk Radio!

This confirms our sense that consumers want trusted sources of quality information. When our CEO was interviewed last Wednesday (7-12-06) on The Today Show on NBC, our website, www.AmericasTopDoctors.com - had 5x our usual high traffic as consumers flocked to the site to search for top doctors and to access state medical board sites to find out about a doctor's license and disciplinary history
