Just An Online Minute... News Corp, Newest YouTube Competitor?

News Corp apparently is mulling creating a video portal that could potentially rival YouTube. Fox Interactive Media head Peter Levinsohn reportedly told investors at a Bear Stearns conference this week that the company is in talks to amass a trove of video clips for online distribution.

"We're in very active negotiations with all of the media companies to create the most robust video offering from professional content on the Web," he said, according to Variety.

The comments come on the heels of a Business Week report that News Corp was gearing up to allow MySpace members to embed video clips of Fox shows on their profiles.

While News Corp's specific plans for MySpace remain murky, it seems that the company has ambitions for MySpace beyond mere social networking. In addition to expanding its video offerings, News Corp also is prepping a news service for MySpace, Terry Heaton reports today on his PoMo blog. Heaton relies on "inside sources" as well as the company's sales materials to conclude that News Corp will aggregate news and blogs from around the Web, while also incorporating social functionality, like enabling users to comment and rate stories.

Just what the web needs. Another video site. Fox will just load it full of their TV shows to promote. How about something new and fresh Fox? I guess they'll wait for someone else to create it and then buy it. What a Bore.

    I'll pass on the offer....

The big media companies have the content, brands and distribution to die for. Why do they need to enable YouTube to build itself as a brand and portal for video, using Fox's assets to enable it? Even if YouTube comes up with a great revshare model for using the content, the big media companies should be wary about letting another site become the starting point where people go for video content. Fox is its own Big-C "Channel" in every sense of the word; it doesn't need to allow its valuable content to enable little-c channels on someone else's site. I just hope they won't limit the embedding to MySpace!

While it is tempting for each company to create their own video portal these days, it may not be wise without having a deep understanding of the potential problems. I have outlined some of the challenges that internet video currently faces over here:

Talk is cheap News Corp! Show me the money (clips, video, content, something!) already....
