Out of 238 separate deals in the online media and marketing sector -- more than half of all deals in the total media and information industry -- the top 10 transactions alone topped $24 billion.
That was 77% of the sector total -- and 33% of all media and information deals. Additionally, JEGI pointed out the top five online media and marketing deals -- which included not only Microsoft/aQuantive and Google/DoubleClick, but also Blackstone/Alliance Data, Silver Lake/Acxiom and Hellman & Friedman/Catalina -- also were among the 10 largest media and information transactions overall.
JEGI analysts said to expect more consolidation in the future.
"There isn't such a thing as old media anymore," said managing director Tolman Geffs. "There's only diversified media. Every major media company is working hard to reshape their distribution model to reach new audiences, and that's going to take years to pan out."
