BOB GRUTER has been named director of marketing and strategic planning for The New Yorker. He comes to the magazine from Sony Electronics, where he was director of media services.

Jungle Media Group has announced the hire of DAVID FINE, 41, as Associate Publisher. Fine, who has 15 years experience in magazine advertising, will lead the advertising and business growth of the company's two magazine properties, MBA Jungle and JD Jungle, which target the career and lifestyle needs of young professionals.

SUSAN TOEPFER, most recently deputy managing editor of Time Inc.'s People magazine, has replaced founding Rosie editor Cathy Cavendar. After slightly more than two years on the job, Cavendar will be leaving the company. Toepfer, whose title will be editor-in-chief, has been with People since 1987.

Havas' Euro RSCG MVBMS Partners named a new team to head creative at its San Francisco office. BERTRAND GARBASSI, formerly creative director of the agency's Fuel North America unit, will become co-creative director along with DOUG PENMAN, who has been a creative director in the office for two years. Both will report to managing director Michael Kantrow. Garbassi replaces Kevin McCarthy, who left to take the post of executive creative director at Grey Global Group's Grey Worldwide, San Francisco.

Two Interpublic Group of Cos. agencies announced shifts in their senior-level ranks with media and creative oversight. GM Mediaworks named CATHY TOCCO executive vice president, managing director of local broadcast. Tocco previously worked for WPP Group's MindShare as director of local broadcast for the Ford Motor Co. account. Meanwhile, JOHN HURST prepares to join McCann-Erickson, London, as senior vice president and creative director for the network's Europe, Middle East and Asia unit. Hurst will be responsible for worldwide creative for McCann's General Mills account, which he also led at Campbell Mithun.

MARY BAGLIVO, CEO of Panoramic Communications, will become president of Arnold McGrath, New York. Baglivo will join the Havas agency July 8 but will continue to aid troubled Panoramic in its divestiture strategy. She succeeds longtime president Stephen Badenhop, who is leaving for personal reasons.

LookSmart has announced the following changes at the company: Chief Operating Officer JASON KELLERMAN will be promoted to Chief Executive Officer effective October 1 of this year. EVAN THORNLEY, Chairman and current CEO of LookSmart, will remain Chairman. The company also announced that it has accepted the resignations of ROBERT RYAN, MARIANN BYERWALTER and JAMES TANANBAUM from its Board of Directors.

Commission Junction has named ERIC ROBISON, who is a seasoned consumer marketing and advertising executive and consultant to Fortune 500 software and media companies, to its board of directors.

Publicis Groupe's Frankel, San Francisco, named DAVID HAAN president. Haan, 49, fills a post vacated in May 2001 by Carleton Prince, who resigned for personal reasons. Haan, who reports to Frankel Chairman-CEO Jim Mack, previously was managing partner at Panoramic Communications' Earle Palmer Brown, Philadelphia.

Charles Schwab & Co., in the midst of a search for a chief marketing officer, said its senior advertising executive has resigned effective at the end of the month. JACK CALHOUN, senior vice president of advertising and brand management, joined Schwab in 2000 from WPP Group's Y&R Advertising, San Francisco, where he had been general manager. Schwab Vice President of Advertising Peter Deluca succeeds Calhoun on an interim basis.

Maxim Online is re-organizing its advertising team. DAVID WADE, who joined Maxim Online last year, rises to become the new advertising director. ROBERT ELDER, who was previously a marketing manager at Sony Digital Entertainment, will take his place as Eastern account manager. PAM STURCHIO has been promoted to online marketing director, a new position.

Forbes.com announced that KAREN BRODSKY has joined its New York sales team as an account manager, with responsibility for the mid-Atlantic territory. Brodsky joins Forbes.com from Ziff Davis Media, where she's worked since 1997, most recently as account manager for Yahoo! Internet Life.

America Online Inc., battling a lackluster advertising climate and slow growth in its dial-up subscriber base, named media industry veteran DAVID LEBOW as executive vice president of programming and strategy for its flagship AOL Interactive Services. Lebow will coordinate strategic programming and promotions initiatives for the AOL service.

SCOTT MCCOY has been named President of Malachite Media, an independent advertising sales company that is representing TEAM Group's, Executive Airline Clubroom Network. Most recently McCoy was Senior Vice President, Sales at AdOutlet.com. Prior responsibilities included over twelve years as Vice President Sales Manager for CNN.

24/7 Real Media has four new Account Executives joining the New York team. FRANK BILICH joins from Vivendi Universal Net; JASON MERHAUT joins from The Comedy Lab where he was responsible for selling creative ad packages to companies like Volkswagen and Time-Life; JOSHUA LEFKOWITZ joins with past experience working for Treasure trivia.com, IPO.com and Zach's Investment Services; FABIANA ESTEVES has 5 years online experience mostly with Starmedia where she held a variety of sales, marketing and creative services roles working with blue chip companies such as Kraft, Budweiser, Sony and Coke. New Account Execs in other offices: MATT DAY joins the west coast team as an AE with online and entrepreneurial experience, and CHRISTINE SCHMIDT, an experienced interactive AE having worked in the space both domestically and abroad for the past 4 years, joins the Chicago office.

JOCK BICKERT, founder and chairman of the board of Denver-based Looking Glass, Inc. is one of four industry leaders to be inducted this year into the Direct Marketing Association's (DMA) Hall of Fame. This designation, the highest given by the DMA, honors Bickert's commitment, leadership and pioneering spirit for the direct marketing industry.

CHERYLL HOWARD has been named the Detroit advertising manager for Kiplinger's Personal Finance. Howard was previously an account manager for Karen Teegarden & Assoc, where she represented Scientific American and the Worth magazine group.

Us magazine’s editor in chief Bonnie Fuller has made a number of high-level hires, three in Hollywood and two in New York. JEANNE WOLF has been named editor at large, after previously covering Hollywood as entertainment editor at large for Redbook and with "Entertainment Tonight," KEN BAKER has been promoted to west coast bureau chief, where he will oversee the magazine’s coverage of Hollywood, and LINDA FRIEDMAN has been named west coast deputy bureau chief, coming to Us from the west coast bureau of Teen People. In New York: JEREMY HELLIGAR, previously entertainment editor at Teen People, has been named senior editor, and LORI MAJEWSKI, also a former part of the launch staff of Teen People, has been named entertainment editor.

Interpublic is creating a sports and entertainment marketing unit and it has tapped publicists PAT KINGSLEY and MICHAEL NYMAN to serve as vice chairmen. MARK DOWLEY, previously the vice chairman of Interpublic's ad firm McCann Erickson, will oversee the new division, called the Interpublic Sports and Entertainment Group.
