• N.Y. Times To Tap Thompson's Digital Experience The Week

    With a new job, outgoing BBC boss Mark Thompson will face the same enemy he had back in Britain, Rupert Murdoch, who publishes the Wall Street Journal. The US company, which owns television stations as well as newspapers, said the 55-year-old's experience with digital media "on a global scale" made him the "ideal candidate". Thompson said it was a "privilege" to lead the Times, which also publishes The Boston Globe.

    At its beginning, the 2012 Games were being labelled as the 'social Olympics'. New research from Vodafone, however, has rebranded them the 'mobile Olympics' as Brits broke their own record for streaming content. Previously, spikes were witnessed during New Year's Eve in 2011 and the Royal Wedding; although the Olympics eclipsed these, with Bradley Wiggins' time trial victory being among the most popular.

  • Netflix Chasing Lovefilm Into Scandinavia PaidContent.org

    Last month, Netflix said better-than-expected losses from its UK and Ireland launch will entice it to launch elsewhere in Europe this year. Turns out, the new launches will be in Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland, Netflix announced on Wednesday. Lovefilm already operates streaming-only movie subscription in three of those countries (Sweden, Denmark and Norway). Now the only one of Lovefim's markets uncontested by Netflix is Germany.

  • Ofcom: Average Home Broadband Speed Up 20% The Telegraph

    Britons now enjoy an average broadband speed of 9 Megabits-per-second, an 18% increase on the average of 7.6Mbps in November 2011, when Ofcom last surveyed the market. When Ofcom began monitoring broadband speeds, in late 2008, the average was 3.6Mbps. Ofcom found that in May 2012 68% of British home broadband users had services promising speeds of up to 10Mbps. In May 2011, fewer than half (48%) of people were using services that delivered those speeds. Eight per cent of home broadband connections were 'super-fast', Ofcom said.
