The Creativity Challenge: Growth in 2023

The pressure is on D2C marketers to be nimbler and more imaginative than ever before. Profitability is the new mantra but finding efficient paths to growth have become challenging. Many D2Cs are looking outside of the tried-and-true performance media channels as these old acquisition engines become less trackable and more expensive. Others have reshuffled their marketing mix to leverage new omnichannel distribution, expand product portfolios, and challenge supply chains. Still more look to affiliations with other brands and influencers to share customer bases. We are in a new stage of marketing creativity among the digitally native D2C brands. The Fall edition of MediaPost's D2C Brand Insider Summit gathers some of these innovators to share lessons learned for deploying a new D2C marketing toolkit.

We will explore:

  • How omnichannel distribution impacts media and marketing allocation
  • What attribution and measurement models will survive in a post-cookie world
  • Can you build a brand on TikTok?
  • Which emerging online and offline channels can drive new customer acquisition
  • How meaningful branding and creative messaging can break through the D2C ad clutter

Throwing cash at familiar channels is no longer the best or most sustainable model for brand growth. At the eighth edition of MediaPost's long-running D2C Brand Insider Summit, we lean into the next deeper toolkit for growth.

In case studies, discussion sessions and MediaPost's signature daily roundtables, we bring some of the most experienced D2C marketers together to share their best practices and examples.

Panel: From D2C to B&M: Optimizing the Omnichannel Customer Journey
As more digitally native product brands migrate to traditional shelves, D2Cs will need to reshuffle the marketing deck for an e-comm path-to-purchase. Where should your media target consumers - to higher margin direct channels/partners or brick and mortar? What are the synergies between the two channels? We ask several brands how they are rethinking their marketing and media planning for a more complex omnichannel customer journey. How have branding allocations and messaging changed? How can they best leverage the brand lift of real-world shelf exposure? What data are retailers sharing with them? And ultimately, how does B&M presence reshape brand strategy?

Keynote: Customer Acquisition After Facebook: A Founders' Co-Interview
Facebook and Instagram have been the fossil fuel of D2C growth. But many D2Cs are breaking the addiction to pursue more efficient and measurable channels - from affiliates to emerging channels, and even direct mail. Two D2C founders interview one another on their best practices and discoveries in pursuing a growth path outside of mainstream social channels.

Panel: Post-Cookie Targeting and Multi-Touch Attribution
Platforms, browsers, and operating systems have disrupted the attribution landscape for data-driven digital advertisers. The walled gardens have flourished. And now the opaque B&M retail channel is in the mix. So, what is a D2C brand to do? Our panel of performance media gurus share their post-cookie models. They will also cover how they are crediting channels, tracking IDs, and making informed allocation decisions in a new era of data deprecation.

Patagonia's mission statement is: we’re in business to save our home planet. For over 35 years, Patagonia has supported over 1,500 environmental groups by donating 1% to grassroots activist organizations that have direct-action agendas and work on strategic, multipronged campaigns to preserve and protect the environment. We built Patagonia Action Works to take this a step further. Patagonia Action Works - a response-driven, relationship building digital ecosystem and toolkit - meaningfully connects our customers and greater community to the grassroots environmental activist groups we support. Golf at Barton Creek: Fazio Canyons Course

The only Texas course to make GOLF Magazine’s 2017 list of the top 100 public courses you can play in the U.S., Fazio Canyons is one for your golf course bucket list. Winding streams and creeks, limestone-bedded canyons and captivating views make this a true Texas Hill Country experience!

Thursday 2 p.m.

Brewery Tour

Join fellow summit attendees aboard Austin’s only concert on wheels! The Twisted Texas Tour bus features a local band riding on board, providing the jams for a good time as we visit THREE local breweries. At each of the breweries, they will serve up local craft brews. You’ll get to try seasonal releases and small batch brews not found anywhere else. Your tour guide will also give a little information about the local craft beer scene and the brews on tap.

Thursday 2 p.m.

Kayak on Town Lake

Experience the scenic and beautiful Austin from the unique perspective of your kayak on this 2-hour tour.  Paddle along and discover some of Austin's great landmarks, including Barton Springs, the Congress Avenue Bridge (famous for its 2 million bats), the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue, and the Austin boardwalk. The tour is a mix of history, new landmarks in the expanding Austin skyline and we also include a little information about the wildlife in the area.

Friday 2 p.m.

Austin City Limits

Spend the afternoon (and later the evening if desired) at the Austin City Limits Music Festival, one of the top annual musical events in the USA. Held in nearby Zilker Park, "ACL" consists of two consecutive three-day weekends. Inspired by the PBS music series of the same name, the festival is produced by Austin-based company C3 Presents, which also produces Lollapalooza.  See the line-up for Friday, October 7th here.

Friday 2 p.m.

Cruise on Lake Austin

Enjoy the beauty of Lake Austin and its surroundings on this fun and scenic cruise. Located just minutes from downtown, what it lacks in size, it makes up for in proximity and charm.  You’ll see tons of multi-million dollar homes, the famous 360/Pennybacker bridge and Austin Country Club, site of the annual Dell Match Play golf tournament each spring.  Refreshments and great networking abound with your fellow Summiters.  A memorable excursion, for sure!

Friday 2 p.m.

Axe Throwing at Urban Axes

Join fellow summit attendees at Urban Axes for a fun afternoon. The sport of axe throwing was invented about 5 minutes after the first axe was created, however it was traditionally undertaken in the outdoors, far away from urban environments. Our aim is to take axe throwing out of the woods and into the bright lights of the big city, by presenting you with ... Urban Axe Throwing!
