GECU - Media Planner/Buyer


Responsible for media planning, negotiation, buying, and reconciliation of traditional, non-traditional, and digital media and advertising buys and acts as a liaison between cross-functional teams to facilitate workflow.  Works directly with Marketing Manager, Strategic Planner, Creative Director, and digital team to work out budgets, choosing advertising media, and organize schedules that optimize results.  Responsible for the timely dissemination of advertising materials to various media outlets.  Is detailed-oriented and performs post-buy measurement and analysis of all media used.  Establishes media relationships to professionally represent credit union. Play a large role in the organization of effective marketing plans and the completion of marketing research.  Troubleshoot problems to make sure a project or process remains on schedule.


Acts as a liaison between media vendors and credit union.

Attends individual media presentations and/or industry presentations to keep current with industry changes.

Meets with media representatives and analyzes, provides valuation estimates, and recommends proposals and/or packages for broadcast, digital, out-of-home and print advertising.

Participates in client/business unit meetings for media plan presentation and strategizing sessions.

Determines television programs, radio stations, digital channels and newspapers for print to use for all buys.

Presents media plans to Marketing Manager, VP – Communication, Sr. VP – Chief Marketing Officer, and other members of the Communication team.

Manages overall media budget and spend.  Leverages buying power and relationships to further the mission and goals of GECU.

Executes media buys.

Processes necessary paperwork for all media buys. Resolves billing discrepancies as needed.

Works in collaboration with members of the Communication team on digital buying strategies.

Measures digital media performance through reporting and analytics.

Provides market analysis and other reports, as requested.

Provides new and profitable ideas to grow business.

Gathers, organizes, and presents competitive research and spending data, as requested.

Keeps all media files relating to credit union’s needs.

Works on monthly media billing and reconciliation for all media placement. Resolves billing discrepancies as needed.

Provides post-buy media analysis.

Sets accurate timelines for jobs using knowledge of creative and production functions.

Manages traffic.

Oversees proper execution and timely distribution of internal campaign assets through email, text, and digital displays.

Conducts Traffic/Production meetings.

Schedules time commitments.

Tracks jobs through the communication department.

Routes jobs for internal approvals.

Expedites workflow.

Supports, directs, coaches, and evaluates employees to ensure employee performance is met.

Keeps up with current events that affect the El Paso border region and media environments. Keeps current with industry changes.

Ensure compliance on a day to day basis within the areas of your responsibility and ensure that employees will receive the necessary training to comply with applicable regulations, to include Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Member Identification Program (MIP), and Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC), which apply specifically to their job.

This position requires the employee to work from home but may require onsite onboarding and training.

Other duties that may be assigned or required in connection with the general operation of the credit union.


Bachelor’s Degree in advertising, business, communications or related field.

Strong project management, organization, time management, and detail-oriented skills.

Strong analytical, problem solving, research, and communication skills.

Experience in negotiating rates and added value.

Excellent research skills and strong knowledge in media studies.

Understanding in SEO and SEM.

Experience with digital buying strategies and digital marketing such as Facebook and Google Ads preferred.

Experience in trafficking digital, broadcast, and print advertising.

Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

Familiar with media buying/traffic software such as Freewheel.

Minimum three to five years of related experience.

Minimum of one year of supervisory experience.

Ability to work effectively under pressure within a fast-paced high-volume environment while maintaining a positive attitude.

A self-starter able to work collaboratively as well as independently.

Requires sitting the majority of the day, lifting up to 20 pounds continuously, and lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally.  Bending, twisting, reaching above and below shoulder frequently, squatting, climbing and kneeling occasionally.
