The Kroger Co. says consumers are loving its private-label brands, fueling a 3.8% increase in same-store sales in its fourth quarter and 5% for the full year. Net earnings at the Cincinnati, Ohio-based supermarket chain climbed to $349.2 million in the quarter, while sales advanced to $17.3 billion from $17.2 billion.

"Kroger offered real value to customers when they needed it most through lower prices, led by our high-quality Kroger brands," the company says in its release.

About 27% of fourth-quarter grocery revenue came from sales of its exclusive Kroger brands, which reached a record-high 35% of grocery unit sales. Kroger also says it added to its market share for the fourth consecutive year, gaining an additional 61 basis points.--Sarah Mahoney
