Twitter To Sell Pay-For Features

More revenue for Twitter is on the way, The Wall Street Journalreports. The microblogging service is finally confirming the age-old theory that it will start selling commercial accounts to "power users" or companies using the service. In the report, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone notes that the company recently hired a product manager to develop these new corporate accounts.

"This makes perfect sense," says Silicon Alley Insider's Dan Frommer. "There's a lot of stuff companies would pay Twitter for, such as a way to verify the company rep's legitimacy; to more analytics and information about who is reading their Twitter page; to better tracking features to see what people are saying about their company."

How much would this be worth to corporations? It depends, Frommer says. On the one hand, he says he could easily see a lot of companies shelling out $10 to $20 per month for the service, even if it only included simple tools. But major companies like Comcast, JetBlue and Starbucks might pay "more than one hundred dollars per month for really good, insightful tools." Meanwhile, Frommer connects with Stone, who confirms that companies and individuals will always be able to use Twitter for free and that the for-sale features will be add-ons.
