Media General Led By Big TV Increase

Driven by a substantial increase in broadcast revenues, Media General announced Q2 revenues were up 2.9% today. The company took in $212 million and compared with revenues of $206 million in the same period last year. That led to a $53 million profit, and a 30% increase compared with $41 million in the 2001 second quarter. The company’s newspaper division, which includes local papers such as The Tampa Tribune continued to post falling ad revenue numbers however. Newspaper revenues were down 3.9%, compared to the 2001 second quarter. Retail and national advertising continued to dip below last year, while classified gained traction, mostly on the strength of automotive. Help-wanted continued to trend 15 to 20% below last year. Broadcast division profits from MGs network of local affiliates posted revenues of $22.4 million increased 47.3% compared with $15.2 million in the 2001 period.
