Verizon Wireless Pulls Out Stops For Droid Launch

  • November 3, 2009
Verizon Wireless will open many of its more than 2,000 retail stores early on Friday in anticipation of the launch of the Droid wireless handset from Motorola. (Verizon is the exclusive provider.) Verizon is also offering consumers a chance to control the messages on two of Times Square's largest billboards -- the NASDAQ and Reuters signs -- via a call-in promotion. Beginning on Friday, through Nov. 20, the billboards will instruct passersby to dial a toll-free number for suggestions about businesses and entertainment in the area. The results -- movies, plays, stores, etc. -- will be displayed on the billboard using Google Maps. Motorola's Droid phone is the first to run on Google's Android 2.0 operating system. --Aaron Baar
