Netflix Cancels Contest On Privacy Concerns

On its corporate blog, Netflix announced March 12 that it has cancelled the second part of its $1 million Netflix Prize after academic research suggested that it indirectly exposed the movie preferences of its users, even if not by name.

The contest, which last year awarded $1 million to a team that came up with a way to improve upon film recommendations, had been headed into a sequel that Netflix said would offer more personal data such as gender and ZIP codes.--Nina Lentini
