Publix To Give Away Diabetes Drug

  • March 15, 2010
In an effort to woo new pharmacy customers and promote its extensive diabetes management system, Publix supermarkets says it will give away metformin -- the most common drug for treating diabetes.

"As both a supermarket and pharmacy, Publix is the ideal setting in which to promote healthy living," the Lakeland, Fla.-based retailer says in its release. "We are uniquely positioned to educate our customers and associates on the nutritional aspects of living with diabetes. As a grocer of choice for so many, we saw an opportunity to better serve the health and maintain the wellness of those learning to live with and manage their diabetes."

The program also enrolls pharmacy customers in its Auto Refill plan, which includes a reminder phone call for prescription pickups, as well as a free glucose monitor.--Sarah Mahoney
