Mag Bag: 'TONY,' 'Bon Appetit' Team With Foursquare

TONY, Bon Appetit Team With Foursquare

Food and entertainment magazines are looking to cash in with Foursquare, the hip new location-based social network, as evidenced by two new partnerships unveiled this week, pairing Foursquare with Time Out New York and Bon Appetit.

Foursquare's deals with the popular city guide and venerable food title will help participating advertising clients drum up business and give readers incentives, in the form of special discounts or insider tips, when they check in at these locations.

The TONY deal allows Foursquare members to get a "Time Out New York Happy Hour" badge when they check in at four locations from a list of 30 participating bars and restaurants. Getting the badge gives the users access to happy-hour specials at an array of hipster-ish venues, including Epstein's Bar, Soda Bar, The Habitat, Village Pourhouse, Planet Rose, Thirsty Scholar and Acme Bar and Grill.

Bon Appetit's deal with Foursquare presents the social network's members with a selection of "the best global epicurean and travel destinations," including restaurants, cafes, bars, hotels and shops chosen by the magazine's editors from 114 cities in 21 countries around the world.

Foursquare users who check in at one of the participating locations can unlock the Bon Appetit Navigator badge and read tips from Bon Appetit editors, including the chef's specialties, wine pairings and interesting trivia.

Since its founding last year, Foursquare has quickly become popular among the denizens of urban culture and nightlife scenes. In mid-March, Foursquare reported more than 500,000 users and 1.4 million venues posted on the network.

Bloomberg Bows Revamped BusinessWeek

The redesigned version of Bloomberg BusinessWeek is set to debut with the April 26 issue, which should be on newsstands soon. The first thing the casual observer will notice is that the front page looks quite different, with the old BusinessWeek banner title replaced by a smaller but equally bold, two-level "Bloomberg BusinessWeek," which gives equal weight to both words. The prominent position of Bloomberg on the front of the magazine is matched by more Bloomberg-branded information inside. The magazine now consists of five main sections: global economy, companies and industries, politics and policy, technology and markets and finance.

On May 3, Redbook is getting a new editor in chief, Jill Herzig, who was previously executive editor of Glamour. Herzig is replacing Stacy Morrison, who left the company to deal with personal family health issues. During her tenure at Glamour, she helped the magazine win two National Magazine Awards and also contributed to the development of brand extensions, including Glamour-branded books and special issues.
