Edelman Founder Reflects On Firm's Success As He Turns 90

Editor-in-chief Rance Crain sits down for a video interview with his "favorite PR guy" -- the about-to-turn-90 founder and chairman of Edelman, Daniel Edelman. The firm, now the largest independently owned public relations firm in the world with offices in 51 countries and about 3,300 employees, was launched in 1952 with the Toni home permanent business ("which twin has the Toni?").

Edelman says things were easier for PR firms back then because there was not as much competition. The secret to his success? Hiring "bright, sharp, experienced people."

Edelman says that PR seems to be prevailing over advertising because "for one thing, you're dealing with the CEO. There may be an advertising guy or a public relations director in the company who's involved, but the CEO finally makes the choice of a PR firm."
