Ad Campaign To Aid Afghan Refugees

  • October 19, 2001
The U.S. Association for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (USA for UNHCR), a charity based in Washington, DC, yesterday announced the launch of a national print advertising campaign aimed at raising humanitarian aid for the citizens of Afghanistan. Jack Leslie, Chairman of the Board of USA for UNHCR, said the campaign will help remind Americans of our important role in helping sustain the Afghan people, particularly women and children, while the war on terrorism is being waged. Print ads will begin appearing in newspapers this Sunday, October 21. Today, more than 3.5 million Afghan refugees are already living in camps in Pakistan and Iran, and as many as 1.5 million more refugees may amass in camps across the Afghan border. The UNHCR is leading an international effort by humanitarian groups to establish as many as 100 new refugee camps to provide emergency food, water, shelter and medical care for refugees before the onset of Afghanistan's harsh winter.
