PR Alert: FAA Mulls Stiff Fine On American For Maintenance Lapses

Sources tell Andy Pasztor that the Federal Aviation Administration is going to propose a penalty of $25 million or more against American Airlines for maintenance lapses that prompted widespread flight cancellations in the spring of 2008.

Looks like it's time for the crises communications team to get in gear to get across American's contention that any FAA action is unwarranted and that, as it says in a statement, the company "has always maintained its aircraft to the highest standards."

Pasztor writes that American believes that the quality of its maintenance exceeds work that other carriers generally outsource, often overseas. I'm expecting to see a lot of home-grown guys in overalls carrying wrenches and speaking directly to the camera.
