Verizon May Charge More For 4G Data Transfer

Verizon customers who want their data moving at 4G speed may have to pay more for it, CEO Ivan Seidenberg tells Roger Cheng and Shayndi Rice, but plans aren't firm yet and he makes clear he doesn't believe that unlimited data plans are totally doomed.

"I don't think the world's that simple," Seidenberg says. "We need to get into it, figure out what the customer thinks is fair, and go from there."

Verizon's 4G network will be available in 38 cities by the end of the year. "If you want to pay for less speed, you'll pay for less speed and consume more, or you can pay for high speed and consume less," elaborates CFO Fran Shammo, who says Verizon's technology can deliver between one and 12 megabits per second, which allows for a tiered pricing structure similar to home wired Internet service.
