The seven-day-a-week "Brenda Starr, Reporter" newspaper comic strip will end its seven-decade run on Jan. 2. Chicago Tribune
columnist Mary Schmich, who has been writing the late Dale Messick's
pre-World War II creation for 25 years, along with June Brigman, the strip's artist for 15 years, are ending their association with the strip. And syndicator Tribune Media Services will end the daily
drama, reports the Tribune
. The character may live on in another venue, such as graphic novels, and the first volume of a collection of strips is due from Hermes Press in June. But the famed
newspaperwoman's newspaper days, begun in 1940, are over.
