Hughes to Shut Down High-Speed Business

ONe of the top U.S. satellite television operators Hughes Electronics Corp. said on Friday it would shut down its high-speed Internet business, three days after pulling the plug on a proposed $18 billion merger with rival EchoStar Communications Corp. The Internet business, DirecTV Broadband, which operates the DirecTV DSL service, had 160,000 subscribers to its Internet service over telephone lines, but the service was expecting to post a 2002 cash flow deficit of $110 million to $120 million.
