Target, Walmart Set To Expand

  • January 11, 2011

Target says it plans to open 21 stores in 12 states this year, each with more extensive fresh-food offerings. New locations are slotted for Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Ohio, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

All are part of the Minneapolis-based retailer's ongoing "P fresh" rollout, expanding its grocery departments around the country. Separately, Walmart says that as part of its expansion campaign in New York City, it is opening a community forum (www.walmartnyc.com).

The Bentonville, Ark.-based company says it is creating the site based on polling that shows 71% of New Yorkers favor Walmart opening its doors in the city, and that last year, New Yorkers spent more than $165 million at Walmart stores outside the five boroughs. The company is also planning to open kiosks at its stores near New York, to introduce city residents to the new forum.
