Worldwide: Argyle TV Pushes Global Channels

Another third-party digital television video channel has started up with a heavy focus on international TV networks.

Argyletv.com, based in Frisco, Texas, says it has a large database of online TV channels airing live news, music and religious programming. It claims to be airing programming from CBS (KPIX San Francisco), Fox (KTTV Los Angeles), CNBC, MSNBC, CSPAN, BBC News and Bloomberg TV.

In addition, the company says it provides more than 3,000 television channels in more than 70 different languages, from over 130 different countries around the world. The company, which says it is free to consumers, did not disclose what kind of agreements it had with program providers.

Other recent digital video companies, FilmOn and ivi TV, have run into legal issues -- especially with the broadcast networks -- for running live TV programming from selected TV markets. Some have claimed protection for these activities under the copyright laws, citing that they are "cable TV operators."

Some of Argyle's featured TV channels say its channel lineup consists of WWE programming, channels Yoga TV, Kung Fu TV, Fashion TV, Day Trader Rock Star and Art Channel.

I'm sorry, but I don't see anything new about Argyle TV except its self-promotion. Other sites such as BeelineTV.com and wwiTV.com have been aggregating links to international streaming video for years.

Argyle's disclaimers for local OTA broadcasters indicate that, effectively, it only streams content that the local stations own. In other words, local news shows. That's nice, I guess, but it's nothing like ivi.TV is doing or what FilmOn.com was trying to do.

I just don't see a story here. What am I missing?
