K-N Ad Revenue Flat

Knight Ridder's total operating revenue for September was up 0.7%, bringing its year to date comparison to a negative 3.9%. Total advertising revenue was up 2.2% for the month and down 4.4% for the year to date. General advertising revenue was up 13.5% for the month and down 3.2% for the year to date. A number of markets showed strength. San Jose was up 94.1%, Kansas City was up 28.8%, Miami was up 8.5%, St. Paul was up 43.7% and Detroit was up 11.3%. Although telecommunications and auto were strong in many major markets, it was soft in Philadelphia. Entertainment/media and the cycling against the prior year's cutback after 9/11 also contributed to the increase. Circulation revenue was down 8.4% for the month and 4.4% for the year to date. Daily copies declined 1.4% while Sunday copies were flat compared with the prior year. Other revenue was up 12.2% for the month, reflecting primarily Knight Ridder Digital, up 45.4%, and an increase in earnings from Detroit.
