Pulitzer Posts Publishing Increase For Q3

Pulitzer Inc. announced that third-quarter 2002 operating income from continuing operations was $19.8 million, compared with $6.8 million in the prior year. Operating revenue increased 3.1 percent for the third quarter of 2002, and declined 1.0 percent for the first nine months of 2002. Third-quarter advertising revenue increased 4.2 percent; retail revenue, including preprints, increased 9.5 percent; and national revenue, including national preprints, increased 18.9 percent. Third- quarter classified advertising revenue decreased 4.7 percent, compared to a 9.8 percent decline for the first six months of 2002, principally reflecting weak, but stabilizing, help wanted advertising revenue. Help wanted advertising revenue decreased 12.2 percent for the third quarter of 2002, compared to decreases of 31.8 percent and 19.1 percent for the first and second quarters of 2002, respectively.
