Capital One Visigoths Invade FarmVille

CapitolOne-B

Capital One is the latest brand to jump on the FarmVille bandwagon.

The promotion began June 2 at midnight and runs through June 9. FarmVille players can get "double mastery" points on crops and trees harvested within seven days when they place a Capital One Visigoth statue on their farms. The double mastery points help players advance to higher levels in the game at a faster pace.

Capital One follows a handful of brands that have previously conducted tie-ins with Zynga's FarmVille game, including Lady Gaga, American Express, 7-Eleven, Dreamworks, Stouffers and McDonald's.

"The popularity of social games is increasing at a rapid rate and offers us a different way to engage consumers and enhance their interactions with our brand," Pam Girardo, a Capital One spokesperson, tells Marketing Daily. "We are giving players a distinctive way to personalize their farms and advance to higher levels in the game, and it's great to see FarmVille avatars dressed in Visigoth attire."

The tie-in also includes access to branded clothing to outfit players' in-game avatars with Visigoth costumes -- a FarmVille first, Girardo says. Players can also earn three dollars in "farm cash" by watching a Capital One TV spot featuring the Visigoths and taking a short quiz. FarmVille farm cash can be used to purchase items within the game.

Players will find the Capital One offers featured prominently in the sponsored link located underneath their FarmVille gameplay area. Players do not have to be Capital One cardholders to participate in the promotion.

"This promotion is similar to the recent American Express/FarmVille promotion, but Capital One definitely has the edge on this one by offering in-game costumes and Farm Cash to players," according to Melissa Coutoulakis, the "FarmVille Examiner" for Examiner.com.
