Redbox, which helped upend the model of the movie rental industry, is looking to do the same for gaming. Last week, the company began offering video games in 21,000 (out of a total 27,000) of its
vending machines around the U.S. The games go for $2 for a 24-hour period, about double the cost of its DVD rental rate. According to
PC Magazine, the company found (after a two-year test in
5,000 machines) that kiosks offering games along with the movie rentals had revenues that were 10-15% higher than those renting movies alone.
