IP-Based Set-Top-Box Shipments Jump In 2011

Although competition from other digital devices is growing, shipments of new TV set-top boxes will continue to climb -- to more than 1 million units in 2011.

The downside: revenue from those shipments worldwide will decline slightly in 2011 compared to 2010, with Latin America and the Middle East/Africa the only regions showing any increase. The new data comes from digital entertainment researcher In-Stat.

But revenue from IP-based set-top boxes in North America will grow in 2011 -- 22% -- much of this coming from new providers delivering TV shows and other content.

Norm Bogen, vice president of digital entertainment of In-Stat, stated: "DirecTV, for example, supplies a satellite STB as the 'big box' in the home's media center while providing IP STBs, now referred to as 'thin IP clients', for delivering content to different rooms in the home." He adds that this development is impacting the IP STB market "in a positive way."

Other research shows that for 2011, 17% of all set-top boxes will include a DVR -- and that 72% of all satellite set-top boxes in Europe will be HD.

Growth continues to be strong in Latin America, with nearly 670,000 cable set-top boxes to be shipped in that region in the third quarter of this year.
