Walmart, Food Makers Launch Anti-Hunger Initiative

  • April 9, 2012

Walmart and four of the nation's largest food makers have partnered in a spring hunger-fighting initiative.

The program, designed to donate more than 42 million meals to Feeding America food banks and Action for Healthy Kids, offers two ways for consumers to participate.

Consumers who visit any of Walmart's 3,854 U.S. stores and purchase designated products from General Mills, ConAgra Foods, Kraft Foods and Kellogg Company can trigger meal donations by entering product codes online, sharing a hashtag on Twitter or scanning a QR code, depending on the instructions provided.

Customers can also visit Walmart’s Facebook page to vote for one of 200 communities hardest-hit by unemployment. The community with the most votes will receive $1 million to help fight hunger, and the next 20 communities will each receive $50,000 for hunger relief.

The Facebook campaign will also provide information on how users can donate or volunteer with hunger-fighting organizations in their local communities.

Actress Kimberly Williams-Paisley and The Band Perry are on board for the campaign promoting the intiative.
