American Society of Magazine Editors Unveils Award Finalists, Martha Stewart Living Gets Nod

The American Society of Magazine Editors yesterday unveiled finalists for the National Magazine Awards, scheduled to be handed out on May 5. The finalists were chosen from among 1,393 entries from 279 print and online publications.

General excellence finalists include The American Scholar, Aperture, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Nest, and Print (circulation under 100,000); Chicago Magazine, CIO Magazine, Harper's Magazine, Harvard Business Review, and Time Out New York (circulation of 100,000 to 250,000); Bicycling, Budget Living, Details, Teen Vogue, and Texas Monthly (circulation of 250,000 to 500,000); Gourmet, House & Garden, National Geographic Traveler, The New Yorker, and Wired (circulation of 500,000 to 1,000,000); Business Week, Entertainment Weekly, ESPN The Magazine, Popular Science, Real Simple, and Vogue (circulation of 1,000,000 to 2,000,000); and Martha Stewart Living, National Geographic, Newsweek, O: The Oprah Magazine, and Time (circulation over 2,000,000). The New Yorker led all titles by netting 11 finalists in nine categories. First-time finalists include Aperture, Budget Living, CIO Magazine, Cure, Psychotherapy Networker, Sky & Telescope.com, and Teen Vogue.

"Despite reality TV and the proliferation of media alternatives clamoring for the public's intellectual attention, magazines remain the single most satisfying source of entertainment coverage and life-enriching information, as well as being a powerful educational tool," said ASME executive director Marlene Kahan in a press release.
