American Media Names Former GM Exec as Consultant

  • March 26, 2004
American Media Inc. (AMI) has poached Michael Browner away from General Motors to serve as a consultant. Browner, who spent 17 years at GM and ascended to the post of executive director, media and marketing operations, will join AMI on April 1. His appointment gives the company an in with Detroit advertisers that few of its competitors can match.

According to a company press release, Browner will assist with three high-profile AMI projects: the re-launch of Star Magazine from a tabloid to a glossy magazine on April 1; the September debut of MPH (Maximum Performance Horsepower), a lifestyle book targeting men between the ages of 18 and 35; and the articulation of California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's platform on health and fitness (Schwarzenegger is executive editor of AMI's Muscle and Fitness and Flex).

"Michael is a world-class marketing and media expert," said AMI president and chief executive officer David Pecker in the press release. "He has been a friend, advisor and business associate for 15 years. It is a great honor for AMI that he decided to help me execute our vision to become a fully integrated media company."

Browner recently served as chairman of the Audit Bureau of Circulation, and remains a member of the board of directors of Detroit's Adcraft Club and a member of the Association of National Advertisers.
