TWC To Carry Lakers Games In Korean

LakersAs the new Time Warner Cable regional sports network (RSN) gets ready to begin carrying Los Angeles Lakers games, the channel will offer viewers the chance to view them via secondary audio programming (SAP) in Korean. The network believes this marks the first time the option has been available in the U.S. for an RSN.

The RSN, which launched Oct. 1, will carry a slew of Lakers games in Southern California this year, starting Oct. 30, and is working with Radio Seoul on the initiative, which begins in November.

The network, Time Warner Cable SportsNet, was launched in conjunction with Spanish-language Time Warner Cable Deportes.

Data shows the Southern California area has the largest population of Koreans in the country, with some 330,000 people. New York is second.

Jae Min Chang, chairman of the Korea Times/Radio Seoul, stated the Lakers are popular among Koreans outside the U.S. and the SAP option marks “a symbolic moment for the Korean American community.”

Paul Lee, a sportswriter and commentator, will provide the Korean language feed.

The RSN recently reached carriage agreements with Charter, AT&T and Verizon. Time Warner Cable Deportes is the country’s first Spanish-language RSN.
